About

The redesign of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation mobile app was a year-long initiative aimed at establishing a scalable foundation to elevate both user experience and interface design.

As one of Hong Kong’s leading innovation and technology hubs, HKSTP required a modern digital touchpoint to better engage its community. This project brought together the UI/UX design team and product development team to create a next-generation mobile app that enhances user engagement and strengthens connection with HKSTP services.

Problem

The existing app had been in the market for years and was noticeably outdated in both technology and design standards.

  • Low user engagement and retention

  • Outdated UI patterns and inconsistent experience

  • Lack of clear product direction and information architecture

  • Misalignment with evolving user expectations

Challenge

This project required more than a visual redesign — it involved redefining the product from the ground up.

Re-evaluating target users and their evolving needs

  • Repositioning the app to reflect HKSTP’s innovation-driven identity

  • Balancing existing branding with a refreshed, future-forward design direction

  • Limited benchmarks due to the app’s internal-focused nature

Without direct competitors, we relied heavily on primary research to uncover insights and guide decisions.

Key Insights

We conducted a series of research activities to gather insights and inform our design decisions.

1. User Interviews & Stakeholder Insights
We engaged with users and internal stakeholders to understand behaviors, needs, and expectations.

2. User Pain Points
We identified key friction points from the user’s perspective, focusing on what users truly need versus what the product currently offers.

3. Persona Development
We created personas representing different user types within the HKSTP ecosystem to guide design decisions and build empathy.

Solution

Based on insights from the discovery phase, we repositioned the app to focus on young, tech-savvy users within the HKSTP ecosystem.

1. User-Centered Product Direction
We defined the experience based on real user needs gathered through research.

2. Experience Strategy
The new design introduces:

  • A more intuitive and streamlined user journey

  • A modern, energetic, and technology-driven visual style

  • Clearer information hierarchy and navigation

3. Scalable Design System
We created a sustainable design system to ensure consistency and future scalability:

  • Youthful and technology-inspired visual language

  • Standardized UI components

  • Flexible foundation for future product expansion

Impact

Following the design completion, we conducted an internal pilot testing program with 15 users to validate the effectiveness of the new experience and gather authentic feedback.

The results demonstrated strong alignment between the redesigned app and user expectations:

  • 90%+ of users felt that the new app experience clearly reflects HKSTP’s brand positioning as young, innovative, and technology-driven

  • 67% of users agreed that the app’s features effectively support their daily needs within the HKSTP ecosystem

  • 70% of users expressed that the app has strong potential to become part of their daily routine usage
